Atletico Madrid have been linked with a number of midfielders. Including Feyenoord’s Mats Weffer and Celtic’s Matt O’Reilly, before a surprise move to sign Gallagher was reported to have failed.

Gallagher has been a key player for Chelsea over the past two seasons. But the 24-year-old’s future remains uncertain. With his contract with the club only due to expire in the summer of 2025. And he is one of a number of players the Blues could offload this summer. 

In order for the cycle to continue Chelsea will need to keep producing top-class academy talent that has the opportunity top shine and build value, but Boehly and Clearlake may feel that they have done the major surgery required and built a profile of playing squad that they sought from the very start.
